In Islam, this practice aligns closely with tazkiyah (purification of the soul) and muhasaba (self-accountability), where individuals strive to purify their hearts and align their intentions with God's will. By reflecting on one’s inner states, seeking forgiveness, and addressing traits like anger, envy, or arrogance, Muslims engage in a journey of self-improvement and deeper closeness to Allah. This process helps in uncovering and transforming negative qualities, nurturing a heart filled with compassion, humility, and gratitude, and fostering a life rooted in sincerity and devotion.

Therapy in Islam

Islam considers mental health as important as physical health. It is widely believed that Prophet Mohammad (peace be upon him) laid down the groundwork for research on mental disorders. Ilm An-Nafs, or Islamic Psychology addresses different topics related to Neuroscience, Psychology, Psychosomatic Medicine, and Psychiatry. Islam takes a holistic approach to mental health and mental illness. This approach emphasized the connection between mental and physical health. There was a strong belief that it was necessary to maintain good health in order to be able to participate in prayers and other religious obligations. Many Islamic scholars have highlighted the importance of mental health through their literary works. The 8th-15th century is considered the Islamic Golden Age. During this period, various Islamic Physicians, Polymaths, and Psychologists such as Muhammad ibn Zakariya al-Razi (known as Rhazes in the western world), Abu-Ali al-Husayn ibn Abdalah ibn-Sina (known as Avicenna in the western world), and Abu Zayd al-Balkhi wrote several books on topics related to mental health. In the Prophet ﷺ's time   

When we take a look at the Quran and the Prophetic Sunnah, we see many examples that illustrate the importance of mental health. In the early ages of the Prophet Muhammed ﷺ’s message when he used to meditate in the cave of Hira. Angle Jibrael asked him to read verses from the Quran, the revelation from Allah the almighty. The Prophet ﷺ's was afraid and worried. His feeling and emotions were disturbed, and he ran to his wife to comfort him. He acknowledged his feelings and his need for support from someone who will understand him. His wife Khadija comforted the Prophet ﷺ and reminded him of his good qualities. Why take Islamic Therapy?

Therapy, in a nutshell, is the process of resolving problematic behaviour, beliefs and relationship issues. In therapy, the client will discuss her or his problems from their point of view. For the process to be successful, the counsellor or the therapist needs to be aware of the client’s culture, lifestyle and religious beliefs. Mental health therapists are required to respect clients' beliefs and cultures and help support them in respect to those beliefs. However, many people who need mental health support refrain from going to clinical counselling and therapy. The rejection of therapy comes from many reasons such as the fear of one’s religion being negatively affected by therapy. While all counsellors are required to respect the client’s beliefs and culture, a Muslim therapist will be more suitable for a Muslim client. As Muslims, our lifestyle is based on our religion, Islam. Therefore, the process of healing for us is directly related to our beliefs and teachings of Islam. A Muslim counsellor understands our worldview and how important the Quran and the sunnah are for our well-being, therefore, he or she might be using some verses of the Quran or Hadiths of the prophet -peace be upon him- to direct us to heal. As mentioned above, in Islam there are therapeutic practices such as prayer, supplication and fasting. Fasting, for example, has been proved to be beneficial for our physical health. In addition to the physical health benefits, fasting is beneficial to our mental health as well because it increases our focus and allows us to ponder about the blessings we have been given from Allah -SWT-. Many Muslims have been seeking Muslim counselling providers. Islamic counselling and Muslim counsellors are important in the healing journey for Muslim clients. 2. Somatic Therapy

In Islam, the concept of inner purification and holistic well-being is deeply valued. The body is seen as a trust from Allah, and maintaining its health is part of spiritual practice. Somatic therapy aligns with these values by recognizing that emotional and spiritual health are interconnected. Practicing mindfulness, releasing tension, and achieving inner calm help a person approach worship and daily life with greater presence, sincerity, and gratitude, supporting their overall spiritual journey.

3. Talk Therapy

Talk therapy, or psychotherapy, is a therapeutic approach that involves talking with a trained mental health professional to explore thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. It helps individuals process past experiences, understand emotional patterns, and develop healthier coping mechanisms. By creating a safe space for open communication, talk therapy can support healing from trauma, manage stress, and improve mental health.

In Islam, self-reflection and seeking knowledge are essential for personal growth and spiritual well-being. Islam encourages believers to examine their inner states, practice muhasaba (self-accountability), and seek counsel when facing struggles. Talk therapy complements these principles by offering a structured way to gain insight into one's inner life, uncover hidden patterns, and find peace. Addressing mental and emotional challenges through talk therapy can also help Muslims better fulfill their roles in family, community, and worship, supporting a balanced and fulfilling life aligned with Islamic values.
